“Grotton wondered, for a brief moment, if there were a special circle of hell reserved for someone like him—or if Dante would have to cobble together an entirely new one.”

“Drigg’s hair was still wet.”

“Oh, so this is what’s down here,” Driggs said as he and Lex descended into the basement.”

“For a moment, there was silence.”

“The stuffed buffalo head on the wall stared straight ahead, its dead eyes unconcerned with the plight of the odd crew that had just pulled in off the highway.”

Pandora brought the Stiff to a stop around ten o’clock.”

Lex clapped her hand over her mouth, but it was too late.”

“It’s Norwood,” Driggs said.”

“We’ll what?

“For a second Lex wasn’t sure she had heard him correctly—but there it was again, reverberating down the barren hallway, amplified and clear and thundering forever in her ears.”

“Elysia worriedly grabbed Lex as they made their way down the long green hallway.”

“I have your parents, Lex,” Knell continued in a voice-over, the image of the Bartlebys still on the screen.”

“Lex and Uncle Mort sat next to each other on the floor.”

“Okay, nobody panic,” said Uncle Mort.”

“It’s not that the Juniors of Croak were poorly trained.”

“The whole way up, no one spoke.”

“The Croakers plummeted back to earth in a narrow tube that didn’t stop for five whole minutes.”

“The house was a crack den.”

“Rise and shine, Croakers!”

“Ready, Lex?”

“If Lex hadn’t Crashed out to the Ghost Gum tree and seen it with her own eyes, she never would have believed it.”

“Drigg’s hair was dry.”

“Think you can do it one more time?”
