Twisty Ten

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

3 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes

This book is one fun scary ride.  It reads a lot like an old school horror book, it kind of reminded me of some of R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series. Like most scary books though you’ll have to suspend your disbelief on the facts of how it all works out (I for one would have been definitely gone or hiding once the first horrible or scary things happened).

Meg and Minnie have been best friends for awhile now and are pretty inseparable.  They have kind of a scary (in my opinion anyway) codependent type relationship going on but slowly you see why they might have become friends in the first place.  The biggest thing that bothered me here though was why exactly they remain to be friends but I guess some relationships that are screwed up work out, there’s though seems to be a bit unbalanced.

There is a really good group dynamic though when everyone is together in the house.  They are all there because it is supposed to be one heck of a party but of course unforeseen circumstances happen in the form of people starting to die in gruesome ways.

The setting was very well done.  As you read along, the atmosphere practically leaps off the page.  All the bad weather sets the mood for everything and once people start dying the suspicions about why and who could be doing this really start flying.

The best part of the story were the twists leading up to figuring out who the killer is.  There were lots of red herrings but the final reveal was indeed surprising.  If you’re a fan of scary books then this just might be the right book for you.
