“MINNIE’S FACE WAS DEATHLY PALE.”

“THE AIR WAS DAMP WITH THE KIND OF COLD meatiness that signaled the approach of another storm.”

“IT HAD BEEN MONTHS SINCE MEG AND T.J. HAD spoken a word to each other.”

“MEG’S BACKPACK THUMPED AGAINST HER HIP AS she ran.”

“BEN’S CUTE,” MEG SAID AS SHE UNZIPPED HER backpack.”

“LAUGHTER DRIFTED UP THE STAIRWELL AS Minnie and Meg wound their way down to the ground floor.”

“AS SOON AS VIVIAN BEGAN ORGANIZING A DINNER production line in the kitchen, Nathan and Kenny made a break for the living room.”

“THAT’S SO WEIRD,” MEG SAID.”

“THE GROUNDS AROUND WHITE ROCK HOUSE WERE a muddy mess that sucked at Meg’s boots as she trekked across the yard.”

DRIPPING WET AND CHILLED TO THE BONE, T.J. and Meg trudged inside.”

“SOMEONE TOOK THE RADIO OUT OF THE BOAT?”

“MEG WASN’T SURE HOW LONG SHE STOOD IN THE foyer dripping muddy puddles on the floor.”

“MEG FELT SICK.”

MOTHER NATURE FINALLY TOOK PITY ON THEM.”

“THE ROOM SPUN.”

“T.J. THREW HIS WEIGHT AGAINST THE DOOR AND they barreled through.”

“T.J. WANTED MEG TO EXPLAIN THE DIARY RIGHT then and there . . . in a room, in a house full of dead bodies.”

“T.J.’S HEAD SNAPPED UP AS MEG FINISHED reading.

“T.J. SAT BOLT UPRIGHT.”

“THE WAY I SEE IT,” T.J. SAID.”

“MINNIE JUTTED OUT HER CHIN.”

“MEG WAS SCARED, TERRIFIED BEYOND THE POINT where she could even process her fear, and she felt as if all the familiar things in her life, the very relationships by which she defined herself, were toppling one by one.”

“MEG SHOVED THE KEYS AND DIARY PAGE INTO her pocket and dashed into the bedroom.”

“T.J. WHIRLED.”

“YOU?”

“MEG WASN’T A PSYCHIC.”

“MEG SPRINTED TO THE PORT SIDE OF THE BOAT in time to see T.J. launch himself at Tom, hitting him square in the stomach with his shoulder, like a defensive end taking out the quarterback.”

“MEG SHIVERED AND PULLED THE THIN BLANKET up around her ears.”
