“Looks like Zara’s at it again,” the old bat’s voice crackled.”

“Change of plans.”

“Three pairs of furious eyes watched them as they entered.”

“Over the next couple of days Lex fell back into her old schedule so easily it began to feel as if she’d never left.”

“After that, the world fell silent.”

“The following week was excruciating.”

“How could you not tell me?”

“Later that night, Uncle Mort finally registered what Lex had said to him about the key, forced her to surrender it, and promptly took it down into his basement to run some tests.”

“The tunnel felt downright oppressive on the way back—the way the walls seemed to close in, the suffocating dirt that got kicked up as they ran, the unending darkness.”

“Lex emerged from the woods, hugging herself.”

“Three weeks later Lex found herself poised at the door of the Bank, out way past curfew, tracked both by cameras and by the CuffLink, and ready to storm the lobby in a most unauthorized fashion.”

“The next day Lex sank back onto Driggs’s bed and glanced out the window at the falling snow, admiring its beauty, its purity, the way it erased everything with a total disregard for all the woes of the world.”

“Where is it, Lex?”

“A vulture circled overhead.”

“Lex had never been to Las Vegas, but even she knew that this place was Las Vegas times ten.”

“Lex wobbled out into the hall on a pair of the very high heels she’d seen on those two women that afternoon, but she wasn’t pulling them off with nearly as much dignity.”

“To your right is Pelts, featuring fur coats made from every mam-mal in the Northern Hemisphere!”

“Driggs, Lex, don’t move,” Uncle Mort barked.”

“Lex jumped back from the door with a yelp.”

“They landed in a dark room, their flailing bodies crashing to the floor in a heap.”

“The road to Croak was deserted.”

“Lex pounded across the Sticks River bridge, the twigs crunch-ing beneath her feet just as they had fifteen minutes before.”

“Don’t struggle,” Zara said, pulling Lex down the hallway.”

“Lex dropped Zara’s body under the Ghost Gum with a thump, next to the sizzling remains of Heloise.”
