Sentence Sneak Peek - Croak

Croak by Gina Damico

The first sentence from each chapter of Croak, it's a mini summary of what you can expect to read.

* Spoilers are highlighted like so :)

"Lex wondered, for a fleeting moment, what her principal's head might look like if it were stabbed atop a giant wooden spear."

"Lex stared out the window of the Greyhound bus at the raging, apocalyptic storm."

"Three hours later Lex finally stepped off the bus."

"I gotta be honest, Lex," Uncle Mort said as they continued down the hill into town, slowing the bike so they could speak without yelling."

"Starving and exhausted, yet unable to fall asleep without the fa-miliar sounds of Cordy wheezing from three feet away, Lex lay on top of her covers that evening and stared at Leonardo Di-Caprio's giant head."

"Her first sensation was one of dizziness."

"Who is that?"

"The next morning, while Lex snuggled comfortably in bed, a crash of cymbals exploded in her ear."

"The rational part of Lex's brain surmised that she had not been thrust exactly into the center of the sun, but in terms of bright-ness, she must surely have been within a dangerous proxim-ity."

"Lex wasn't scared."

"Lex picked at her lips as she leaned against the Ghost Gum tree and watched pairs of Senior Grims swapping out for their lunch breaks, emotions swirling through her mind like unflagging hur-ricanes."

"Whoa," Lex said a few days later as she and Driggs scythed into a dingy-looking bathroom."

"As Driggs led her into town, Lex became convinced that all his claims of bars and drinking were complete fabrications."

"A lot can happen in a month."

"Where are we going?"

"After finding Corpp's devoid of Juniors later that evening, it didn't take Lex and Driggs long to guess that their crew had decided to hole up in the Crypt's common room for the night."

"The next morning, things were awkward."

"Morning!"

"After her disheartening visit, Lex hoped to devote whatever lei-sure time she could find to figuring out a way to stay in Croak, especially since she seemed to have gotten away with squealing to Cordy."

"The party—if it could still be called that—persisted through the night, though the mood had shifted considerably; most of the revelers just ended up lying down in the street and watch-ing the falling stars in silence.

"The next day, DeMyse's director of Ether Traffic Control dropped dead in the middle of his shift."

"Another geezer, huh?"

"The next morning, as Driggs and Lex came into the kitchen for breakfast, Uncle Mort took one look at them and began snicker-ing."

"Lex crashed onto a dusty wooden floor."

"Lex lay very still on the ground of the Field and looked up at the purpling sky."

"Funerals are depressing even under the best of circumstances, if such things exist, and Cordy's service was no different."
