Peachy Paranormalcy

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
This book gets a pretty 4 out of 5 gnomes for being extremely funny and chock full of paranormal goodness. The names of the chapters always give you a feeling about what's going to happen in the chapter and are usually pretty humorous with names like "Soul Suck", "Hey, Stupid" and "Oh, Bleep."  A lesson learned is that faeries cannot be trusted no matter how much control you think you have over them.  I love the humor throughout and the tone does get much darker later in the book with more than one death.

Evie is an agent of the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) and has been with them ever since they found her as a child.  She is very special because she can see through the glamours that paranormals use.  She gets to go after and contain things like hags, vampires and werewolves.  Her weapon of choice is a pink taser that she has named Tasey.

She has a kind of family in the Center where she lives.  Raquel who's in charge of the Center is the surrogate Mom and guardian of Evie.  Evie's best friend Lish is a mermaid.  She runs  a lot of the technology side of the center and schedules the pickup of the agents when they are in the field.  Lish can't talk normally so everything is translated in a robotic voice which leads to Evie and Lish cursing by saying the word Bleep.  Having Bleep as a curse is bleeping genius and I know made me laugh more than once.

The two love interests are Lend and Reth.  There is a clear winner in who Evie will choose because one is pretty darn crazy.  She meets Lend unexpectedly and they seem to be interested in each other right away.  Lend is a great character because at first you are not even sure what he is because he can change his appearance to look like anyone and in his true form he's practically invisible.  Reth is a faerie so of course he's good lucking but he also seems to have his own agenda concerning Evie.  Overall Reth is extremely creepy and overly attached to Evie.

Lend and Evie work very well together because she can see through his shifting to the real him underneath (like his Mom says, they balance each other.)  He also accepts Evie for who she is even when she thinks that he shouldn't.

The bad guy in this book is pretty bleeping scary and Evie seems to have a connection to them.  The big bad of the story thinks what it's doing, killing paranormals, is the right thing to do. I was also started to be reminded of the terminator in Terminator 2 with how unstoppable the bad guy is.

There are lots of questions and mysteries surrounding Evie and her future. I can't wait to see where she goes from here and what happens next.

  3. Okay, this one's going on the "to read" pile - I love the idea of a paranormal agency, sort of like Sanctuary on SyFy, and I really love the mermaid angle.

And anyone whose weapon of choice is a pink taser named Tasey MUST be awesome.
